Bane 'The Acausal Fire' review

BANE
'The Acausal Fire'
(Abyss Records)

Bane is a band I have known about and followed for a few years now, so it's great to see they are on such a respected label like Abyss. For those of you unfamiliar with Bane - the band comes out of Serbia's underground scene and 'The Acausal Fire' is their second CD (the debut 'Chaos, Darkness And Emptiness' was released in 2009). 'The Acausal Fire' is ten tracks of melodic, yet semi brutal and aggressive blackened death metal, the guitars and drums are extremely fast and done to perfection, guitars have the thin black metal sound but also use some nicely done solos not usually heard in this style of metal. The drums are non-stop but played with a lot of precision and well-written patterns that fit perfectly with the rest of the music. The band does some keyboards but before you condemn the band too harshly they know how to meld the keyboards with the rest of the instruments for a fuller sound and the keys add an extra layer to Bane's already full and dark sound. The vocals are a nice mix of deeper death growls and some blackened metal screams. Fans of melodic, atmospheric should definitely give Bane a chance - I don't think you will be disappointed by this album.

Daemonicus 'Deadwork' review

DAEMONICUS
'Deadwork'
(Abyss Records)

Dan (owner of Abyss Rec.) definitely has great taste when it comes to signing top quality Swedish blackened death metal. This time he has unleashed Daemonicus upon the underground maniacs. 'Deadwork' is the band's second album and easily one of 2012's best death metal releases (We're way beyond the schedule, I know - ED). Uncompromising death metal fast, chaotic guitars, pummelling drums that go from mid- to blasting beats. The vocals are a nice mix of brutal death growls and more raw screams. Daemonicus will definitely impress the die-hard fanatics traditional Swedish death metal.

Erupted 'In The Grip Of Chaos' review

ERUPTED
'In The Grip Of Chaos'
(Abyss Records)

Erupted are a new band that hail from the mighty Swedish underground but before you write them off as just another clone band or wanna-be give them a chance. The band obviously as mentioned is influenced by the early '90s Swerige-gods but I also hear some U.S. influences from the legendary Autopsy and Cianide and similar style bands. You should get the metal picture by now. Erupted don't waste time - they like their metal raw, dirty and straight to the point, with mid-paced guitars and drums. The band are not all clones as they have a lot of good ideas within the music and keep it interesting. After listening to 'In The Grip Of Chaos' it's hard to believe this is the band's debut so I for one am really interested to hear and see where this band goes in the future, but for now everyone who is into old-school Swedish and U.S.-style death metal go to the Abyss Rec. web-store and buy this metal gem now!!!

Corrosive Carcass 'Composition Of Flesh' review

CORROSIVE CARCASS
'Composition Of Flesh'
(Abyss Records)

The underground devotees will appreciate this band, this isn't a mainstream friendly sound, rather than that this is a chaotic brutality that deserves a listen. Corrosive Carcass do not get old or repetitive, their sound is more along the lines of Swedish death metal, Carnage or Nihilist for example. This promising effort comes in attractive packaging, and has great production, well done artwork too. They have many characteristics that make them sound foreign, maybe the vocal aspect and the cool guitar riffs and solos. Strong vitality that transmit anger, among the death metal bands, these guys are among the upper class. Corrosive Carcass deserves some recognition. Fucking exceptional!

Southwicked 'Death's Crown' review

SOUTHWICKED
'Death's Crown'
(Abyss Records)

Intensely influenced by Obituary in my opinion [c'mon, this is Allen West's project after all - ED] , 'Death's Crown' holds no less than 9 tracks of pounding death metal. The cover art, the lyrics reflect an obsession with serial killers and morbid stuff, an ideal topic for the underground culture and extreme music, musically the band borrows pieces of extreme genres, such as thrash and death, with a kick ass way to execute the instruments. Southwicked is essential for fans of Benediction, Obituary and Dismember. Get in touch with Clawhammer PR or Abyss Records to get a copy of this CD. Mandatory!

Radiation Sickness 'Reflections Of A Psychotic Past' review

RADIATION SICKNESS
'Reflections Of A Psychotic Past'
(Abyss Records)

Fast and creative sound, the songs on this CD are massive. Brutality at its best, unending assault of metal, the artwork looks like a horror movie poster, and this is well reflective of the lyrical content for the most part. The album contains insane songs, the vocals are low growls mixed with madness, we have all out avalanche grind beats, and moshing riffs. Again, the lyrics are demented, violent and assaulting. Radiation Sickness is like a more brutal version of Carcass [eehh, mate, really? -ED]. 'Reflections Of A Psychotic Past' is sure to please any metal fan. Definitely among the best releases I've gotten all year. Do check this out! [The CD also features a re-mastered version of the band's debut album from 1990, 'The Other Me' - ED]

Rocking Corpses 'Rock N' Rott' review

ROCKING CORPSES
'Rock N' Rott'
(Abyss Records)

Cool name for a band of this style. Violent down tune stone rock with death metal vocals, the entire CD is a unique blend of chaotic riffs and pure rock and roll in the most brutal and devastating way possible. Professional production, kick ass artwork and layout, I've never heard anything so artistic. This band brings inspiration to the underground scene. This is what it would sound like if Black Sabbath did death metal. Mercilessly infectious!

Eternal Helcaraxe 'Against All Odds' review

ETERNAL HELCARAXE
'Against All Odds'
(Abyss Records)

Ireland has always had a great metal scene whether it was black, doom or death - and Eternal Helcaraxe are no different. Eternal Helcaraxe fall into the epic, pagan black metal metal genre. 'Against All Odds' is their debut and is very impressive for a debut. Fast, intense music with some well done keyboards that are nicely mixed into chaotic, violent black metal for a nice blend of traditional, fast black metal and parts of epic, pagan blackness. Guitars are blazing fast with some good riffs, drumming is fast blast beats with some mid-paced beats. The vocals are blackened metal screams but there are some really well-done and sung melodic clean vocals. It will be nice if the band uses more of the clean vocal patterns on the next recording as they seem to fit the bands style very well. Highly recommended to all fans of quality, pagan black metal.

Fetus Stench 'Stillbirth' review

FETUS STENCH
'Stillbirth'
(Abyss Records)

Fucking death metal band from Sweden, they have that unique sound, violent skullcrusher band, many influences from Nihilist, Dismember and Carnage. In 2012 it is difficult to find something so brutal and direct to the brain, it surprises me a lot, very good production, all fans of nasty death metal will enjoy this CD .Unique distorted guitars that will destroy your neck from doing circular moshing, very good approach, no matter if you heard this style before, the important thing is to find bands that maintain the strength of the bloody death metal. An excellent album that should be heard. If you really consider yourself a metalhead, give this band a try. Get your beers and enjoy this excellent lethal work.

Humangled 'Odd Ethics' review

HUMANGLED
'Odd Ethics' EP
(Abyss Records)

A great fusion of guitar shreds! Only 14 minutes and 50 seconds of full intensity. The riffing on this really makes this a winner in my eyes, it's a good attempt. This is death metal with some different things thrown in the music to try and keep things interesting. Definitely not a mediocre brutal band. Humangled has to be heard to be believed.

Entrench 'Inevitable Decay' review

ENTRENCH
'Inevitable Decay'
(Abyss Records)

Entrench from Sweden play violent "classic" thrash metal. The band seems to be influenced mostly by the early German gods of yesterday. The musicians of Entrench have a lot of good musical ideas to keep the music both fresh and memorable while keeping the pure thrash sound and attack alive within Entrench's songs. Chaotic fast guitars that while being played at insane speeds also have some complex structures and solo's that are pulled off flawlessly. It seems their are a lot of thrash metal bands coming out of nowhere in the scene but Entrench have a lot of great ideas added within their thrash that makes this band definitely one to stand out and above the endless sea of others currently flooding the scene. Fans of intense, raging thrash definitely get a hold of Entrench's 'Inevitable Decay' today!!

Fester 'A Celebration Of Death' review

FESTER
'A Celebration Of Death'
(Abyss Records)

A very powerful production of the Norwegian band Fester. Doom metal riffs and death metal growls in this savagery art performance, there are a few changes in the riffs but the tracks are constructed very well, it keeps your attention until the end of the CD. The guitar sound is awesome, nasty and raw along with the the vocals, in fact that match with the band's sound, the production has paid attention to the guitars so that offer a very solid sound. In general this album left me a very good taste and I think it's worth listening to it. Another great release of Abyss Records!

Thousand Year War 'Tyrants And Men' review

THOUSAND YEAR WAR
'Tyrants And Men'
(Abyss Records)

Alaska's THOUSAND YEAR WAR have released a great release of heavy straight-forward death metal but there is also a lot of melodic over-tones to give the band a nice mix of straight-forward brutal death metal and melodic death metal. Fast, thunderous drumming patterns mixed with some intense outbursts of blasting rage. The guitars are heavy and thick sounding within their approach but there is also some well written complex riffs and solos. The vocals are powerful, deep growls and some blackened shrieks. THOUSAND YEAR WAR does have some darker, more melodic parts, but the band seems more comfortable and at home playing the heavier straight-forward death metal style.

Maax 'Unholy Rock & Roll' review

MAAX
'Unholy Rock & Roll'
(Abyss Records)

Well, here's my review of this insane and awesome band , which I can only describe as pure alcoholic heavy metal with black metal vocals and evil lyrics. No harmonies of perfect sound here, just true metal directly to your brain, this style is just perfect and I say it again - this album kick so much ass. It's like to hear the almighty MOTORHEAD but even louder and more evil. The difference of MAAX is the influences of punk along with rock and roll ,what a lethal combination! Another perfect release of Abyss Records, here's a perfect example that underground music is alive and well. Excellent band, I can't wait for the next album !!!

Fester 'Winter Of Sin' review

FESTER
'Winter Of Sin'
(Abyss Records)

'Winter Of Sin' was originally released in 1992 but thanks to the US label Abyss Records it is now being re-released so both old and new black/death metal fans can bask in the greatness that is Fester! Fester comes out of the legendary Norwegian underground and lets face it back in the early 1990's no other country came close to releasing great black metal like Norway. Fester was definitely ahead of their time and went against the norm (remember this was originally in 93 before black/death was blended together by so many), instead of the raw, primitive style that Norway was known for Fester played fast black metal but their guitar riffs/chords were a little thicker and even had a few solo's intertwined the riffs to give them a death metalish feel and sound. Fester even went a little further to make 'Winter Of Sin' a "classic" within the black metal scene by adding some avantgarde and melodic interludes to their already gloomy and grim sound. Even today in 2011 Fester's 'Winter Of Sin' still stands out a great and original masterpiece. Definitely get this if you like original and dark black metal.

Hat 'Vortex Of Death' review

HAT
'Vortex Of Death'
(Abyss Records)

The Hat keep the old Norwegian classic black metal traditions alive. I never tire of this sound, style no matter how many times I hear it again and again. It is probably only fair that you know that about me ? I worship old school black metal. You can tell listening to this that Hat themselves have listened to and possess great reverence for the old bands on their early works like Darkthrone, Immortal, Emperor, Graveland etc. It is just so hateful, cold, cutting you to pieces with cruel torture. Yes I do not tire of their archetypal obscure bm rasp vocals, tremolo picking and hypnotic driven drumming. 'Vortex of Death' is really well done and you can just feel the men behind it are dedicated to what they are doing. I simply can not resist recommending this album highly to you.

Reviews

ORCIVUS
‘Consummatum Est'
(Next Horizon Records)

Genuine dedication to darkness’ consuming void, both lyrically and musically, designed to crush all weak souls is the code word for this album. Yeah, humanity has been blindfolded, fed with garbage like pigs for slaughter and perfectly happy receiving such treatment. I can’t explain otherwise why Orcivus isn’t continuously mentioned in the same breath as the other top-shelf Swedish black metallers – this is seriously that good, or should I say evil? Frenetic, masterfully composed and played, this stuff radiates a true aura of bleak hopelessness and despair, listening upon listening unveiling its little intricacies, thus adding a deep feeling of negative emotion to the already impressive initial impact. Never boring for a second, these eight songs are built to last – unrelenting, memorable and Hell-fueled insanity that steals your soul and delivers its pity remains at the gate of no return. A textbook example of Swedish blackness – all cheap imitations beware, as this is the band that rightfully defends the unholy legacy once associated with the real, frightening, black metal spirit.
ORCIVUS
‘Est Deus In Nobis’
(Next Horizon Records)

Casting the plague once more, Orcivus have created yet another album that is bound to please all hungry souls swearing allegiance to chaos, blasphemy and glorification of the inner strength. The songs are filled with discordant riffs and melodies, relentless drumming and menacing vocals that at any given point spread the message of darkness with great clarity. That’s how it should be done, my friends. Adding more variation and haunting passages to their nuclear arsenal the band have also succeed to come up with songs that are even more memorable than past stuff, resulting in an album you can only miss at your own expense. Naysayers might try to pass off nonsense this being a Dissection clone  but what I see in Orcivus is more in the lines of similar mind trip and unending devotion to the arcane, both lyric and music wise. Lay down your souls.

NEX 'Zero'
(Next Horizon Records)

There's definitely no rest for the wicked and this band, which features Tore Stjerna in its line up, is yet another proof of the old saying. Wave after wave of pure melancholy are directed at the listener's aural port through these snail paced doom metal compositions, which in band's own act of confession have been recorded as a nod to the early works of Anathema, Candlemass, My Dying Bride and Katatonia. That said, I shall add Nex to be quite adept at the chosen style – this stuff has a strong hypnotizing effect on the brain, guitars creating a suffocating vibe during the album's duration and the thick production allows the dying heartbeat rhythm section to pummel the unexpected. This is a grower type of a release, the more one invests on it, the more it pays back and given some time, and the right mood, 'Zero' crawls under your skin and reaches for your utter attention. Recommended to everyone with a taste for morose journeys into his/her own subconsciousness.

TORTURE DIVISION
‘Evighetens Darar’
(Abyss Records)

After well over two decades of monstrously massive Swedish reign on various metal fronts it comes off naturally when you see familiar faces in bands and projects currently doing the turns. Having a line-up consisting of Jorgen Sandstrom (yes, that Sandstrom), The Project Hate’s guitarist K. Phlipson, Vomitory’s Tobias on the drum helm and helped by an outstanding production by Dan Swano, this band is going to deliver, and then some, to even the most jaded death metal maniac.  There’s no pretension here, this music grabs you by the throat  from the get go, obliterates your senses with its blasting, overly energized and catchy as all hell death metal intensity and leaves you in well deserved awe. Also the album’s duration of less than half hour makes perfect sense – you’d be able to catch some breath before pressing the repeat button for another round consisting of Torture Division punishing you with a real lesson in violent, unrelenting, death metal. Do yourself a favour and get this, either from the label or directly from the band’s site, where you’d be able to download this album in its entirety, plus some older stuff and which site holds an amazing idea of how music reach the listeners. This band simply can’t do wrong.

SINCARNATE ‘As I Go Under’ (Hatework)

I was glad to be sent band’s brand-new album from Sincarnate’s main man, guitarist, lyricist, and all around cool guy Giani, after contacting him about the review I did on their older material. What’s of importance is that this Romanian band, despite all hardships and line-up changes, has succeed to progress on every level and wrote an album that fully deserves your attention. The songs are masterfully crafted, displaying a range of emotions that are as varied and interweaving into one another as in our own existence – this is doom death done with class, knowledge and genuine devotion. Strong, floating guitar melodies, helped by equally interesting, ethnically influenced at times, keyboards, inventive drumming and a vocalist who’s able to find the right approach for what the music calls for in the given moment. All doomsters are encouraged to support this fresh sounding band, the scene needs such acts for a proof that when ambition meets up with work coming directly from the heart the end result can be nothing else but  a really captivating listening experience.

ABOMINANT
‘Where Demons Dwell’
(Deathgasm Records)

Yeah, I’m catching up to this band way too late in their career, this being the first album of Abominant I listened to, and their ninth altogether. More the fool me as the band’s style of high octane death is bound to please these ears, now I like it when the music is this maniacally intense and variable. Freak not, this is still the metal of death but these bastards have heard their fair share of both thrash and black, and it shows. Insane speed, throaty vocals spewing forth messages of hatred, massive guitar riffs – if death metal blasphemy is what you’re craving for Abominant has it in abundance. Bands like this deserve huge respect for continuing against all odds, trends and overall stupidity and keeping to their chosen path, now wasn’t metal meant to be stubborn, rebellious and all about individuality? Don’t know for you but for Abominant that’s what it means. And they back this up with crushing music.
